Grammar

Grammar is the area where there are probably the least significant differences between the two varieties of English. The most obvious differences are in (a) the formation of verbs (past tense, past participle) and in the use of verb phrases (e.g. the use of the simple past versus the use of the present perfect); and (b) the use of prepositions (where the two varieties sometimes use different prepositions or where one variety uses a preposition while the other does not). The first table below gives some examples of different verb usage; the second gives examples of different prepositional usage.
